How to Buy a Bracelet as a Gift Without Knowing Her Wrist Size

Before You Choose a Size, Check Whether She Wears Bracelets

Before buying a bracelet as a gift, first check whether the recipient enjoys wearing bracelets and what kind she reaches for. A trusted friend or family member may be able to help you find a useful size reference, or you can refer to a bracelet she already wears comfortably. Notice whether she prefers a close or loose fit.

Different bracelet structures do not fit the same way. Do not copy the length of a fine chain, rigid bangle or round-bead stretch bracelet directly to another style. Use an existing bracelet as a clue, then follow the measuring instructions for the bracelet you plan to buy.

Buying a bracelet as a surprise can leave you with one awkward question: what size should you choose? A “standard” size is not a universal fit, and a stretch bracelet is not automatically adjustable. Before guessing, try to find a useful clue about both wrist size and how the recipient likes a bracelet to feel.

Find a sizing clue without spoiling the surprise

If she has a bracelet that fits comfortably, ask whether a trusted friend or family member can help you find its size or measure it with her permission. An existing order confirmation or a size she has already shared can also help. Avoid searching through private belongings or accounts.

Record the bracelet's type as well as its length. Note whether she likes that bracelet's fit. Knowing the length of a piece she never wears will not tell you much.

If the only reliable way to find out is to ask, asking is better than inventing a precise measurement. You can keep the colour, stone or design a surprise even if the size is not.

Do not copy another bracelet's size blindly

Check what the seller means by “size.” It may refer to wrist circumference, finished bracelet length or another measurement. A 7 in bracelet is not necessarily intended for a 7 in wrist.

Bead diameter also matters: a bracelet made with larger beads can feel different from a fine chain of the same stated length. Use a similar bracelet as a clue, then follow the new bracelet's own measuring instructions. Do not add an arbitrary amount to a measurement or assume that every brand's standard size is identical.

At À DEMAIN, our stretch bracelet sizes refer to the finished bracelet length. Use our Bracelet Size Guide to match a wrist measurement to our sizes. If the measurement falls between two measurements in our guide, choose the next size up.

If you must estimate, treat it as an estimate

Body size, height and clothing size cannot reliably tell you someone's wrist circumference. Our general gift suggestions are 6.5 in for very petite recipients with noticeably slender wrists, 7 in for relatively slender recipients with smaller wrists, 7.5 in as a starting recommendation for most gift recipients, and 8 in for a larger frame with broader wrists.

These suggestions are not a guarantee of fit. If you have no useful sizing information and getting the fit right matters more than keeping everything secret, involve the recipient in choosing. Check the seller's return, exchange and resizing terms before ordering; do not assume an incorrectly sized gift can always be exchanged.

Stretch does not mean one size fits everyone

A stretch bracelet opens enough to pass over the hand, but that does not mean it should be pulled wide or worn too tightly. We use elastic cord with limited stretch to help keep the beads securely strung. Roll the bracelet gently over the hand when putting it on and taking it off rather than pulling the beads apart.

We use a substantial knot for a secure finish and tuck it inside the À DEMAIN logo bead. If it becomes visible, gently ease it back inside the logo bead without pulling the bracelet wide. If it resists, do not force it.

Include a little care advice with the gift

For frequently worn stretch bracelets, we recommend replacing the cord approximately every two to three years. This is a maintenance guideline, not a guaranteed cord lifespan. Check it regularly and arrange restringing sooner if it becomes loose, stretched, frayed or damaged.

When we are attending a market in the recipient's city, they can book a free on-site restringing appointment with us, subject to our market schedule and appointment availability. This service does not mean that we have a permanent repair location in every city.

Leave time for the bracelet to be made

Our jewelry is handmade in Edmonton, Canada. Natural stone stretch bracelets are assembled to the selected length; please allow up to 7 business days before dispatch. Custom-made 6.5 in and 8 in sizes require an additional 7 business days of preparation. Check the individual product page, then allow for delivery after preparation.

Once you have a useful size reference, explore our handmade bracelets and choose a colour or stone that feels like her. The best surprise is a piece she can comfortably enjoy, not a size chosen with false certainty.
